From Rental Property to Movie Set: Why Creative Owners Win

One day, we received a message through Airbnb that was a little different from the usual booking request.

They were not asking about the Wi-Fi.

They were not asking whether the property had enough towels.

They wanted to use our short-term rental to film a movie.

My project manager, Madhu from Property Wiz, discovered the request and brought it to my attention. When he explained what they wanted to do, I quickly said:

“Yes! Let’s make it happen.”

Sometimes the best opportunities in real estate begin with a request that sounds a little crazy.

I Could Have Charged More—but I Didn’t

A movie production is very different from a normal Airbnb stay.

Instead of a family arriving with a few suitcases, we had a large production crew arriving with cameras, lights, equipment, vehicles, and hundreds of people involved in the project.

Naturally, I could have charged them a large premium just because they were filming a movie.

I could have added a “Hollywood fee,” a “camera fee,” a “lots-of-people-walking-around fee,” and probably even a “someone-is-yelling-action-in-my-house fee.”

But I did not do that.

I charged our normal rental rate.

Why?

Because I believed the long-term value of having the property appear in a movie could be worth much more than making a few extra dollars that day.

My thinking was simple:

Once people learn that this property was used in a movie, more guests may want to stay there.

The property would no longer be just another short-term rental.

It would have a story.

Being Open to Possibilities

Real estate owners sometimes become too focused on doing everything the normal way.

A long-term rental must have a tenant.

A short-term rental must have vacation guests.

A commercial property must have a business.

But creative owners ask a different question:

“What else could this property become?”

In our case, the answer was a movie set.

The opportunity came from an Airbnb lead, but it became much bigger than a normal booking. That is why I believe investors should always stay open to possibilities—even when the request is unusual.

You do not have to say yes to every idea. You still need to protect the property, understand the plan, confirm insurance, and make sure everyone knows the rules.

However, you also should not say no simply because something has never happened before.

Sometimes the unusual request is the opportunity.

The Day Our Rental Became a Movie Set

Seeing the production come together was an incredible experience.

There were crew members moving equipment, setting up lights, preparing scenes, and working together to bring the project to life.

A property that normally welcomed short-term guests was suddenly filled with cameras, microphones, production equipment, and people making a movie.

It was exciting to watch.

I will be sharing some pictures of the crew and the production activity, but I cannot reveal the name of the movie or provide details about the project because of our confidentiality and nondisclosure obligations.

So, no spoilers from me.

I enjoy movies, but I do not want to become the person who accidentally reveals the ending before the trailer is even released.

What I can say is that I am extremely excited and proud that our property became part of the production.

Becoming Part of Ybor City’s Story

This opportunity meant even more to me because of the property’s location.

I have always wanted to own a piece of Ybor City.

Ybor has a special history, personality, and culture. It is one of those places where the buildings feel like they have stories inside them.

Owning property there was already meaningful to me. But seeing one of our properties used in a movie made it feel like we were contributing one small piece to Ybor’s continuing history.

For years, people have built businesses, created memories, raised families, and told stories in Ybor City.

Now, a new story was filmed inside our property.

That is something I am proud to be part of.

Why I Believe This Could Change Everything

The immediate rental income was not the most exciting part of this opportunity.

The real value comes from what happens afterward.

When permitted under the production agreement, we may be able to market the property as a real filming location. That gives future guests another reason to choose it over hundreds of other rentals.

Imagine seeing these two listings:

Beautiful short-term rental in Ybor City.

Or:

Stay in an Ybor City property that was used as a movie location.

The second one has a story.

People remember stories.

Some guests may stay because they love movies. Others may simply think it is fun to spend the night somewhere that appeared on screen.

The production may also introduce the property to location scouts, photographers, content creators, and other companies looking for places to film.

One Airbnb inquiry could create opportunities that continue for years.

That is why I did not focus on squeezing every possible dollar from the first booking.

Sometimes charging a little less today can create much more value tomorrow.

Creative Owners Play the Long Game

Real estate investing is not only about purchasing properties and collecting rent.

It is also about recognizing opportunities.

A creative owner might use the same property as:

  • A short-term rental
  • A corporate rental
  • A photography location
  • An interview set
  • A commercial location
  • A television set
  • Or even a movie set

The building does not change.

What changes is how you think about it.

Many owners would have seen the large crew, extra activity, and unusual request and immediately said no.

I saw a chance to give our property a story that no renovation or new furniture could create.

Creative owners do not ignore risks. They ask questions, create reasonable rules, protect the property, and then look for a way to make the opportunity work.

Special Thanks to Madhu and Property Wiz

A very special thank-you goes to Madhu, our project manager from Property Wiz, who discovered this unusual Airbnb lead and helped turn the idea into reality.

Madhu and the Property Wiz project management team coordinated the details, communicated with the production, prepared the property, and helped everything run smoothly.

With hundreds of people, production equipment, vehicles, cameras, and moving parts, this was not exactly a normal Tuesday at a rental property.

Thankfully, Madhu and the team kept everything organized and made sure the house did not accidentally become a real action movie.

Great job, Madhu and Property Wiz!

The Lesson: Do Not Be Afraid of Crazy Ideas

This experience reminded me of one of the most important lessons in business and real estate:

Always remain open to possibilities.

The next opportunity may not look like anything you have done before.

It may arrive through Airbnb.

It may involve hundreds of people.

It may include cameras, directors, actors, and a confidentiality agreement that prevents you from telling everyone what is happening.

But it may also give your property a story, create future demand, and allow you to become part of your community’s history.

Our Ybor property started as a short-term rental.

Then one Airbnb message turned it into a movie set.

And that is why creative owners win.

Sometimes the smartest answer is:

“That sounds a little crazy. Let’s see how we can make it work.”
