Graystone COO Jay Michalec Shares a Defining Lesson on Accountability and Investor Trust on Bluegrey Behind the Deal

Jay Michalec, Chief Operating Officer of Graystone, recently appeared on the Bluegrey Behind the Deal podcast, where he shared a candid leadership lesson involving investor funds, internal accountability, and the real cost of doing the right thing.
During the interview, Michalec was asked about the hardest decision he has ever made that directly impacted an investor’s money. His response was direct. The decision itself was not hard. The lesson behind it was.
Early in his career as a property manager, Graystone placed a tenant who appeared highly qualified, with strong credit and verifiable income. The tenant paid rent for several months, then unexpectedly reversed multiple rent payments made via credit card. By the time the reversals occurred, the funds had already been distributed to the landlord, consistent with Graystone’s standard monthly payout process.
An internal audit later revealed a screening red flag that had been missed, one that could have prevented the issue. While the landlord would have reasonably assumed the loss resulted from identity fraud, Graystone recognized that the oversight stemmed from its own internal process.
Rather than asking the landlord to return the funds, Graystone chose transparency and accountability. The company disclosed the error, accepted responsibility, and absorbed the financial loss.
“Trust your people, but inspect what you expect,” Michalec shared during the episode. “When something is missed, you don’t hide it. You own it.”
The experience led to strengthened screening procedures, improved internal audits, and reinforced Graystone’s commitment to integrity when managing investor assets.
